So, what's new?

Not much. I've been pretty busy. I've been doing some reading, a bit of writing, and just generally living.

Uni and I went to see Grindig at the Reverb last week. It was a great show, as always. After the show, we went to Melanie Pringle's in Pickering to enjoy some beer and nachos (ah yes, the OTHER breakfast of champions). We talked about all sorts of stuff.

One subject that came up, as it often does is the work of William Goldman. First off, if you don't know who he is, you should be ashamed of yourself. He is arguably one of the best screenwriters in the business (All The President's Men, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Misery, and The Princess Bride to name but a few). He has written a few books on his adventures in screenwriting. The first, Adventures In The Screen Trade is excellent, but I also really enjoyed his more recent book Which Lie Did I Tell. The guy is all about storytelling, in everything he does, and his books take you in and draw you along. Check them out if you get a chance.

The next day, Uni and I got together to go see the movie Comedian. It is a documentary following Jerry Seinfeld as he tries to put his new act together. It is a fascinating look at the world of the stand up comedian, both at the level of someone like Jerry, or Chris Rock or Bill Cosby, and also at the level of a hack named Orny Adams. I'm not even going to talk about Orny, because he really isn't worth talking about.

Seinfeld puts his new routine together, bit by bit. There is a fascinating section where he is dying on stage, as he forgets where he was going with a particular bit. It's just amazing to watch someone of his stature just lose it. Overall, a really enjoyable documentary.

That's it for today. More on the weekend, I promise.
